So it goes
Today at precisely 3 p.m I decide the path has to move three feet to
the north. The cedar needs more room. I'd like to get to the patio without tripping over branches and once I'm there I don't want to feel boxed in. The digging goes quickly. I like
to dig after all. I relocate the columbine. I dig a smooth curve. I roll
the granite rocks that hug the perennial bed to their new locations. I pry out a slab of limestone
that I've been walking on for years and heave it aside. It lands three
inches shy of my intention. I try again. Exhale, lift, heave. I forget
to let go. The limestone drives my pinky into the granite. The end.
